Nearly everyone is aware of the dangers of untreated hypertension. It can lead to heart attacks, stroke, blindness and a number of other conditions.
I too have published a number of articles especially since I too suffered from hypertension. I intend to continue this effort because it is serious but treatable.
Most people are familiar with the standard blood pressure ranges – anything over 140 over 90 is considered hypertension. 120 over 80 up to 139 over 89 is considered pre-hypertension.
Less information pertaining to single high readings is as readily available. Many people are not aware that a high systolic reading (top number)even with a low diastolic reading read can also result in ill health effects.
Many people are also unaware that a high diastolic reading (bottom number ” measuring blood pressure when the heart is at rest) can also create health problems.
After publishing a recent article about high systolic blood pressure, a few people inquired about high diastolic readings.
A diastolic reading over 90 is normally considered high blood pressure. If the reading is between between 80 and 89, pre-hypertension may be present.
The diastolig reading drops for a lot of people as they get older. This can result in a possibly incorrect assumption that the blood pressure is in the healthy range. Therefore, it is very important to consider both readings.
A medication prescription is often the result of a hypertension diagnosis. So, be completely up front with your doctor with regard to concerns about adverse effects. All of the hypertension drugs have them and they can be worrisome (muscle pain, liver damage, headaches, sexual dysfunction, dizziness and many others.) You may want to insure ALL options are considered in order to address the problem with alternatives to drugs.
As always, the cure itself should not leave you worse off than the original problem. A fast cure is very tempting given hectic schedules, yet conversely physically inactive lives in many cases.
