When trying to control high blood pressure, following doctor’s orders to the tee is of utmost importance. Still, it has been well recognized for many decades stress plays a part in the development of hypertension in many people. So, one would naturally conclude, controlling stress plays a part in the management of it.

So, just what can we do to regulate our stress levels and thereby give us a good chance of overcoming our hypertension? First, let me say no one can be sure if reducing stress is the magic elixir for you in particular.

In any event, it is not logical to think there is an upside to living with high stress levels. So, it is certainly worth the effort for every one of us to know how we can deal with stress, even if hypertension were not an issue.

The Hidden Benefits Of Exercise

Ways to manage stress are sought after by almost everyone these days and there is nothing more renowned for its roll in the controlling of stress than exercise. Though not all of us are Olympic athletes, I certainly am not; just about everyone is capable of doing a fair amount of exercise. In fact, I dare say just about all of us are capable of doing a lot more exercise than we do now.

It doesn’t take a lot of preparation or planning to do exercise. Just get out and take a walk. Of course, there are weather considerations, but on most days taking a walk would be, well a walk in the park.

Of course, there could be three feet of snow outside or you could be a handicapped person. If either of these are true you may have to be a little more creative to get your exercise in, but usually, it is doable. In my case, I live in the northeast, so my walks often get left behind in favor of an aerobic DVD. In the case of my wife, who is disabled, she has found special needs DVDs. She can follow along with one of those and get in a workout and derive immense benefits from doing so.

Walking – The Way To Go

Still, for most of us, walking is the perfect remedy to add to our doctor’s plan to lower our blood pressure. Not only does it relieve stress, which is good for our blood pressure, it helps us control our weight and that is also important for those of us working to lower our blood pressure.

Moreover, the weight one loses as the result of doing any kind of exercise tends to be fat, (the bad weight) while muscles (the good weight) is being brought back out of moth balls. This is a plus because it is not only a healthy benefit; it also makes a person more attractive!

Before I end, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention deep breathing exercises, progressive relaxation, joining a fitness club and in general taking a more carefree attitude about life as other ways to help reduce stress. But gees! I got to tell you, in my book, there is nothing like a good old fashioned walk everyday, or at least three times a week to get you on the road to less stress, better health and hopefully, excellent blood pressure readings.
